ROMEIROS~PILGRIMS is a bilingual book that is the result of the intense work of several years travelling around Alto Minho (northwest of Portugal), trying to learn more about the people making that region a permanent place for party.

This book’s aim is to turn the reader into a traveller to the Alto Minho pilgrimages. Intrinsically, to turn the reader into a romeiro. While reading it, it will be possible for the reader to understand how the contemporary life sets a dialogue with age-old traditions. At the end, the reader might be surprised to find how this dialogue helps tradition to be stronger rather than making it disappear. A vivid and colourful vision, away from the usual stereotypes of meekness and fado of the Portuguese people. To do it, a strong contact with people was needed, making them part of a sublime story. This is, thus, a romance made of 200 photos, picturing one day of pilgrimage among pilgrims, but simultaneously taking the reader to visit all Alto Minho pilgrimages.
These pictures presented to us with extreme sensibility and care, show immediately the irony of an innate and rare anthropological point of view that shows us what lies beyond appearances. Nevertheless, there is always a deep respect and knowledge for this people and the personae that are dignified by their own character. After the book, we get the strange feeling that one can hardly look at Alto Minho as before. Above all, we learn to look again, to let our prejudice go away and get back on earth with cleaner eyes…

The book is built as a single body where pictures take the reader to live the morning, the afternoon and the night of a whole day of pilgrimage, full of tradition and party. It ends with the text by the young writer from Minho, Raul Pereira, a literary complement with a modern and expert approach.

With his hands on the camera and the possibility of an interesting scenery, his imagination twirls all around, taking him with an enthusiastic, almost childish but clear excitement towards what surrounds him as he creates with a Spartan strictness the images that so often have astonished me for their opportunity and composition. (Alberto Monteiro)

To treasure this book is to treasure a whole people, a sense of belonging but also difference. A sense thousands of years old, transformed into special moments such as these. To treasure this book is to treasure persons, to remember persons with their huge vulnerability, but also their perseverance in the quest for a greater good, a dream, a paradise that, for a few moments, relieves the pilgrims from their pains, thanks to their enormous hope.
